We have fallen far short of expectations and it's no longer possible to sell the India story," said NR Narayana Murthy, chairman emeritus, Infosys, in an interview to ET NOW, this paper's TV channel.
"The world expected a lot from us. And compared to that expectation, we have fallen very very short. And therefore, I would say, this is worse than 1991," Murthy said. "I meet a lot of CEOs outside India and earlier India was mentioned once every three times China was mentioned. But now, if China is mentioned 30 times, India is not even mentioned once," he added.
Government indifference to the plight of business has brought decision-making to an unnecessary standstill, he believes. "A lot of decisions can be taken within the ambit of current legislation," Murthy said, especially on several issues that impact the IT industry - one issue is that some I-T officials do not recognise a statement of work, and insist on a company negotiating a new master agreement for every project. "Now, this is not done anywhere in the world and we have been arguing with the I-T Department," he said. "If this is my job, tough decisions have to be taken. We have to accept that."
Murthy said he has submitted presentations to the prime minister, and written to (then finance minister) Pranab Mukherjee on such issues: "It has been fourteen months and nothing has been done. "Now, this is not in the realm of legislation. It's not about ideology, politics. All that this requires is one senior bureaucrat to say 'let's adopt global standards'. And it can be done in a few hours." Most of the problems faced by investors are of this nature, he said.
Other issues, which are currently being used to disrupt the functioning of Parliament, are really matters for the courts. "Let's leave it to the court to decide who is right and who is wrong. Let us not pre-judge and let us get on with the business in Parliament," Murthy said. He also puts retrospective changes to tax laws in that category: "When the Supreme Court has ruled on a certain case, to go back and say I will change the law, to me, is very surprising."

"These are not things that an aspiring economy should do. The impact has been sad and confidence of global investors has been shaken very, very badly."
The government should reverse the retrospective changes that impact Vodafone and other foreign companies, he maintains, and go as far as to ensure that no further retrospective changes are allowed. "We must come to a conclusion politically that we will not do things on a retrospective basis unless there is something drastically wrong with the law and even that is for the court to decide," Murthy said. In another interview to a television channel, the Infosys founder offered some advice to the prime minister. "Please encourage your bureaucrats, your ministers, to take quick decisions. That's all what I am requesting him. Nothing else."

Huawei Ascend D1 Quad XL to launch in Germany in October
First announced way back at Mobile World Congress in February, the Huawei Ascend D Quad and D Quad XL have both faded into obscurity since. After causing a bit of a stir with what at the time were very impressive specs, many were excited to get their hands on the devices. Fast forward 6 months to IFA 2012 in Berlin, and it seems that we finally have an answer over when the Ascend D1 Quad XL -- it seems to have gained a 1 in the name now -- at least will be coming to market. It's still an impressive device, but as the months have passed since MWC it no longer stands out quite so much as it once may have done.
Announcing the information at IFA, the D Quad XL will be launching in Germany from the end of October. It will be available in two colors, matt black and ceramic white for an off contract price of €499 (£395/$625).
For those not familiar, the 4.5 inch Quad XL stands above the regular D Quad by the inclusion of a pretty hefty 2600mAh battery, which Huawei says is good for 500 hours of standby time. The device is powered by Huawei's own K3V2 1.2GHz quad-core processor, backed up by 1GB of RAM and 8GB of on-board storage, which is expandable by microSD card. Facebook is mishandling its crisis, experts say

Here I am! Wall Street is wondering where Facebook Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg is as its stock languishes at half its debut price. PR experts say he needs to show leadership or find someone who will.

?Where is Mark Zuckerberg?
The question was posed rather forcefully by CNBC host Jim Cramer last week as the social network?s share price continued to plunge and news broke that an early Facebook investor, Peter Thiel, had sold $400 million worth of stock in the company.
The drop in the value of Facebook since May has caused huge concern about the company on Wall Street, and media outlets have even called for the resignation of the company?s founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Facebook shares were trading at around $19 recently, about half?their $38 price when they went public on May 18.
Cramer?s query echoes a broader feeling on Wall Street about the problems now bedeviling the popular social networking company: With the value of its shares down over 50 percent since its highly anticipated IPO, is the company making a hash of the public relations disaster it is now facing; and, just as important,?why has Zuckerberg remained quiet about the state of the company?
Facebook is in crisis, and in a crisis a company?s CEO should be front and center, acknowledging the key issues, apologizing to those affected and giving a commitment to not letting an incident happen again, said Larry Chiagouris, a marketing professor at Pace University?s Lubin School of Business.
?The company needs to make the investment community comfortable that it has people at the top that are serious and determined to make profits,? he said.
?The wonderful thing about the stock market is, in the final analysis, the price of something tends to move toward its real value, so if there really is value in Facebook beyond its current price, the management team has failed to communicate that to investors effectively,? Chiagouris added.
Increasingly, investors are asking if Facebook?s problems are more profound than simply a swooning stock price.
Technical glitches marred Facebook?s first day of trading on the Nasdaq stock market in May, leading to complaints of slow order confirmations and too many shares offered at too high a price. Lawsuits against Facebook and its underwriting banks followed, and Facebook?s share price hasn?t traded anywhere near its $38 offering price since then.
Facebook?s IPO was expected to be one of the biggest stock offerings to ever hit Wall Street, and the company?s offer price?valued the company at $104.2 billion, making it the largest company to go public in the U.S. by market capitalization.
Investors? love for Facebook drove interest in its IPO to extreme levels, and the same herd mentality is now working in reverse, said Chiagouris.
?[Facebook?s stock price] will eventually get to a point where its valuation is unrealistic,? he said. ?To turn that decline around, Facebook has to do a major move -- one would be to replace top management.?
While Mark Zuckerberg is clearly inventive, no one will ever say that he is an effective businessman, Chiagouris said. The company needs to turn the reins over to people who are ?adult? and not beholden to Zuckerberg, he added.
?Facebook has one thing that people want: The largest community in the world. That?s a wonderful asset, but they?re sitting on that asset and they haven?t figured out how to monetize it yet,? Chiagouris said. ?Facebook needs people who are savvy at monetizing an asset, and that would probably not include most of the top managers who are there now.?
Facebook?s Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg has long been seen on Wall Street as Facebook?s ?adult? executive, having spent years as a senior executive at Google. But Sandberg has yet to demonstrate any independence at the company, Chiagouris said, and despite her appointment to Facebook's seven-person board last June the company?s stock price has continued to slide.
When it comes to handling a crisis, Facebook?s management team has done a poor job, public relations experts say.
As a social media company, Facebook?s image is its most vital asset, said Mario Almonte is a partner at a New York-based Herman & Almonte Public Relations.
?Once MySpace lost its image, it lost its cool factor,? Almonte said. In the same way, Facebook is having an image problem, and this time it?s with Wall Street investors.
The main problem is Zuckerberg, Almonte said.
?He?s locking himself in a room somewhere and refusing to talk to anyone,? he said. ?I think he needs to swallow his pride and bring in experienced people who understand Wall Street and understand the nature of investing and the politics of Wall Street, because a lot of this is about perception.?
?Zuckerberg needs to step up to the microphone and assure them he is working on a strategy to make Facebook profitable for them - and then he must bring in better financial and marketing experts than himself to develop a clear strategy for transforming Facebook into a profitable enterprise,? he added.
Investors have grown skeptical of the company?s ability to communicate its plan to reverse slowing revenue growth and make money from mobile devices -- a channel of strong user growth.
Google is an example of a technology company that got its advertising business right, Almonte said, because ?the advertising is there, all around the user, but it never gets in the way of the clean, efficient user experience.??

Troops deployed as Hurricane Isaac targets New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - Tropical Storm Isaac strengthened into a hurricane just off the U.S. Gulf Coast on Tuesday, lashing the New Orleans area with strong winds and heavy rain seven years after the city was devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
Isaac's storm surge could pose a major test of New Orleans' new flood control systems and reinforced levees. Forecasts from the U.S. National Hurricane Center showed the storm coming ashore in the Mississippi Delta late on Tuesday, possibly taking direct aim at the so-called Crescent City.
"Isaac has finally formed into a hurricane, so we are officially in the fight and the city of New Orleans is on the front lines," New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu told reporters.
"Citizens have to be prepared. I'm going to ask you to hunker down," Landrieu said, as hundreds of U.S. Army National Guard troops took up strategic positions around New Orleans.
Brandishing automatic assault rifles to ward off any threat of looting, the troops in military vehicles took up positions on mostly deserted streets. Their arrival came as driving rain and stiff winds began battering the city's iconic French Quarter and its boarded-up storefronts.
Earlier, the Army Corps of Engineers closed for the first time the massive new floodgate on the largest storm-surge barrier in the world, at Lake Borgne, east of New Orleans.
In other preparations, oil production in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico ground to a near halt, and ports and coastal refineries curtailed operations as Isaac neared the Louisiana coastline.
At 2 p.m. EDT (1800 GMT), the Hurricane Center said Isaac was centered about 135 miles southeast of New Orleans with top sustained winds of 75 miles per hour.
Its forward speed was a relatively slow 10 mph, a concern for people in the path of the storm since slow-moving cyclones can bring higher rainfall totals. The storm was about 370 miles wide.
Isaac spared Tampa, Florida, where the Republican National Convention began on Monday. But it forced party leaders to revamp their schedule and they may have to make further revisions so as not to be seen celebrating Mitt Romney getting the party's presidential nomination while Gulf Coast residents are struggling through the storm.
President Barack Obama added his concerns in a statement from the White House, saying: "We're dealing with a big storm and there could be significant flooding and other damage across a large area."
Now was "not the time to tempt fate," he added, saying people should heed warnings and evacuate if instructed by authorities to do so.
Isaac had New Orleans in its sights as the city still struggles to recover from Katrina, which swept across it on August 29, 2005, killing more than 1,800 people and causing billions of dollars of damage.
MULTIBILLION-DOLLAR DEFENSE
After Katrina, the Corps of Engineers built a $14.5 billion flood defense system of walls, floodgates, levees and pumps designed to protect the city against a massive tidal surge like the one that swamped New Orleans in Katrina's wake.
The floodgate that closed on Tuesday is 26 feet high and 1.8 miles long. It was designed to prevent the Inner Harbor Navigation Canal from breaching its walls, as it did in 2005, inundating the Lower Ninth Ward, Gentilly and New Orleans East neighborhoods, and St. Bernard Parish.
Most of the Lower Ninth, which still shows the devastation of Katrina, was deserted and quiet by lunchtime on Tuesday. Residents who hadn't evacuated were unloading water, food and fuel from their cars and trucks into their homes.
Authorities have urged thousands of residents in low-lying areas to leave, warning that the storm could flood towns and cities in Mississippi and Alabama, as well as Louisiana, with a storm surge of up to 12 feet.
Rainfall accumulations, potentially totaling as much as 20 inches in some areas, could also trigger widespread flooding.
Isaac was not forecast to strengthen beyond a Category 1 hurricane, the lowest on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale. Its top projected winds were about 80 mph. While that would be well below the intensity of Katrina, which was a Category 3 storm, the size of Isaac's slow-moving system has forecasters predicting widespread flooding.
"It's going to take till the weekend before this gets out of the southeastern states," Hurricane Center Director Rick Knabb told reporters on a conference call Tuesday afternoon.
"The hazards are beginning. It is going to last a long time and affect a lot of people," he added.
In New Orleans' French Quarter most businesses were closed and boarded up by around midday on Tuesday, while a handful of workers piled sandbags along doorways. Police and military vehicles were parked throughout the neighborhood.
One of the few businesses that remained open was the Pier 424 Seafood Market.
"We have fresh food and we're here to serve the tourists who are still around," said executive chef Jeremy Latimer, 32.
"Everyone's worried about flooding, but most of our staff lives nearby, so it's easy to get home when it's time to evacuate," he said.
One tourist left in the district was Craig Drees, an accountant from Russells Point, Ohio.
"It's a little eerie how quiet it is," said Drees, standing on a street corner with a few friends. "But it seems like the city is taking this very seriously and will be working to keep people safe."
U.S. ENERGY OUTPUT DISRUPTED
With nearly 80 percent of offshore U.S. Gulf of Mexico oil production shut in and nearly half of natural gas output offline, energy companies along the Gulf Coast refining center braced for the storm's impact, shuttering some plants and running others at reduced rates ahead of Isaac's landfall.
Intense hurricanes such as Katrina -- which took out 4.5 million barrels per day of refining capacity at one point -- have flooded refineries, keeping them closed for extended periods and reducing fuel supplies.
The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that about 1.32 million barrels-per-day of refining capacity had come offline in the Gulf Coast by Monday afternoon. Louisiana usually processes more than 3 million barrels per day of crude into refined products.
Although no damage to offshore installation had been reported, some energy experts said the sweeping disruption of oil production, refineries and key import terminals could make it more likely the U.S. government would release oil supplies from its nearly 696-million-barrel Strategic Petroleum Reserve in the coming weeks.
Prior to the storm, the White House had already considered a release, as tensions over Western sanctions on Iran pushed up oil prices. Despite Isaac's disruptions to production, international benchmark Brent crude traded down slightly to $112 a barrel on Tuesday.
Isaac killed at least 23 people and caused significant flooding and damage in Haiti and the Dominican Republic before skirting the southern tip of Florida on Sunday.

Why are there so many species of beetles and so few crocodiles?
ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? There are more than 400,000 species of beetles and only two species of the tuatara, a reptile cousin of snakes and lizards that lives in New Zealand. Crocodiles and alligators, while nearly 250 million years old, have diversified into only 23 species. Why evolution has produced "winners" -- including mammals and many species of birds and fish -- and "losers" is a major question in evolutionary biology.
Scientists have often posited that because some animal and plant lineages are much older than others, they have had more time to produce new species (the dearth of crocodiles notwithstanding). This idea -- that time is an important predictor of species number -- underlies many theoretical models used by biologists. However, it fails to explain species numbers across all multi-cellular life on the planet, a team of life scientists reports Aug. 28 in the online journal PLoS Biology, a publication of the Public Library of Science.
"We found no evidence of that," said Michael Alfaro, a UCLA associate professor of ecology and evolutionary biology and senior author of the new study. "When we look across the tree of life, the age of the group tells us almost nothing about how many species we would expect to find. In most groups, it tells us nothing."
Another idea, that some groups are innately better or worse at producing species, similarly fails to explain differences in species number among all of the major living lineages of plants and animals, the life scientists found.
"We know that some groups, like flowering plants or cichlid fishes, have been exceptionally good at producing species during certain periods of their evolutionary history," Alfaro said. "However, when we look at the ages of all of the major groups of plants and animals, these differences in speciation rate are not sufficient to explain the differences in species number that exist in extant groups."
Alfaro and his colleagues studied 1,397 major groups of multi-cellular eukaryotes -- including animals, plants and fungi -- that account for 1.2 million species. Working as "evolutionary detectives," they were able to see whether the groups that split the earliest tended to have the most species. They assigned a "species richness score" to these 1,397 groups, using novel statistical and computational methods they developed.
If age does not explain species diversity, an alternative idea is that a lineage will produce species up until the point that it fills an "adaptive zone" that allows a maximum number of species, Alfaro said. In other words, a lineage of bats, whales or penguins has a maximum capacity that is determined by habitat requirements and competitors.
When an adaptive zone is first colonized, the growth of new species will be rapid, up until that limit has been reached. Once a zone is full, this speciation rate will level off. New species will not emerge until one of two events occurs: First, an existing species may go extinct, in which case it may be replaced. Second, a species within the adaptive zone may evolve a new trait -- sharp teeth, wings, chemical defenses or camouflage, for example -- that confers a significant ecological advantage and takes it into a new adaptive zone, creating opportunities for new species to emerge,Alfaro said.
"Adaptive zones are an old idea in evolutionary biology, but there is little understanding of whether speciation rates or adaptive zones are more important in explaining species richness across the tree of life," Alfaro said. "If adaptive zones control biodiversity at the broadest scales, then the rate of species growth will be a good explanation of species richness only right after a lineage has entered into a new adaptive zone. Once the adaptive zone has filled up, then, no matter how much time goes by, the number of species will not change much."
Thus, these adaptive zones, which Alfaro also calls "ecological limits," serve to restrict the number of new species that can emerge.
"Most of the groups that we studied have hit their limits," he said. "Ecological limits can explain the data we see. What's really driving things is how many times lineages evolve new innovations that move them into new adaptive zones.
"The ultimate goal in our field is to have a reconstruction of the entire evolutionary history of all species on the planet," Alfaro added. "Here we provide a piece of the puzzle. Our study sheds light on the causal factors of biodiversity across the tree of life."
Daniel Rabosky, an assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor is the lead author of the study, and Graham Slater, a National Science Foundation-funded UCLA postdoctoral scholar in ecology and evolutionary biology, is a co-author.
The research is funded by the National Science Foundation and by the University of California's Miller Institute for Basic Research in Science.
In a 2009 study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Alfaro and his colleagues reported that mammals and many species of birds and fish are among evolution's "winners," while crocodiles, alligators and a reptile cousin of snakes and lizards known as the tuatara are among the "losers." That study also showed that new species emerge nearly as often as they die off.

An industrial road on the outskirts of Boston winds its way deep into a mess of run-down factories and broken brick buildings. It?s a part of town you have no business going to without specific purpose, or a GPS that has led you horribly astray. Nevertheless, on this sunny Saturday in the dead heat of summer, I found myself standing at a crossroads amongst these factory buildings, trying to find my way to beer.
Not all breweries are what your mind has made them out to be. You paint a picture of gleaming steel fermenters and glorious bottling lines, row upon row of wooden barrels and full kegs as far as the eye can see. Maybe even a parking lot to leave your car whilst visiting said brewery. But the reality of the situation is that many of the upstart craft shops that have trickled into the market over the past year or two have had to start with the bare bones. With limited funding, these graduated homebrew-turned-nanobrew operations have set out to build the commercial basics that will allow them to establish a place in the local market and take a shot at the dream. Night Shift Brewing is one of these operations.
I first came upon Night Shift at a tasting back in the spring, just shortly after the brewery?s launch in March 2012. Their line of beers was bold, intriguing. Unlike most craft breweries, Night Shift skipped over the usual suspects ? IPA, Pale Ale and the like ? for a trio of offbeat brews with ingredients you?d sooner see on a food menu than on a beer label. Bee Tea is a wheat ale brewed with sweet orange peel and orange blossom honey, and aged on tea leaves ? a surprisingly mellow and impressively restrained beer. Taza Stout is a mouth-watering flavor bomb brewed with chicory root and ginger and aged on cacao nibs from nearby Taza Chocolate. And their most popular release, Trifecta, is a Belgian-style pale ale fermented with three Trappist yeast strains and aged on vanilla beans.
Back at the industrial compound in Everett a metal door on a drab concrete building opens into a dark, shadowy hallway. Once a factory for World War II machinery, the building is now home to two small breweries (the other, Idle Hands) working side-by-side to pump out beer as quickly as they can. Night Shift?s facilities are indeed that of a fledgling start-up ? somewhat manual, somewhat all over the place. But they?ve got the essentials to produce the impressive beers they?ve been putting out, and the chops to back it up.
Michael Oxton, Robert Burns and Mike O?Mara are the threesome behind Night Shift. Friends, roommates, and brewers, these beer-savvy young entrepreneurs have crafted their passion through years of home brewing and experimentation into the late hours of night (hence, Night Shift). They have a penchant for offbeat ingredients like rose hips and habanero and for making beers that go well with food. They have a sour room that stays at a summery 85 degrees and plays host to wild yeast fermentation and barrel-aging beers. Their latter two releases, a Belgian-style quad ale fermented with brown sugar and Shiraz and a Berliner Weisse style sour ale brewed with lemongrass and ginger show that not only can these guys come up with creative concepts but they can execute as well.
When I was at the brewery, Night Shift was in the process of bottling their fourth batch of Somer Weisse (personally, my favorite release by Night Shift). The last batch was scooped up by the beer-consuming public at impressive speed and had been out of stock everywhere in the Boston area. Clearly a sign that Night Shift is doing something right. Viva Habanera, the newest entry to the lineup, is?currently available at retailers in the Boston area. It?s another?impeccably?balanced, flavorful beer with a touch of spicy heat to kick start the senses.
In the months to come, the craft beer industry will inevitably continue to grow and more home brewers will cast aside their day jobs in pursuit of the dream. If Night Shift tells a story of this new breed of nanobrewers, we, the beer drinking public, are truly in for a remarkable and exciting year ahead.

For those of you who may need a last minute hurricane checklist, below is the suggested supply list created by the United States Coast Guard. Suggested Hurricane Supply List
To prepare for the unknown, each home should have a 72-hour Disaster Survival Kit. You will need to pack some essential items to help you and your family survive, whether you stay at home or leave it during a disaster. Ensure at least three days (72 hours) supply for each person. Do not forget pets where applicable! The following is a minimum suggested list of Survival Kit supplies:
Drinking Water:?
- One gallon per person/per day in unbreakable containers,?? Avoid using containers that will decompose or break,l such as milk cartons or glass bottles.? A normally active person needs to drink at least two quarts of water each day.? Hot environments and intense physical activity can double that amount.? Children, nursing mothers, and ill people will need more.
- Don?t forget to add additional water for mixing formula if you have children and for your pets.? Rotate the drinking water each year.
- Food preparation and sanitation require another two quarts (minimum) per person daily.
- Purchased bottled water that has been sealed is best for storage.? It meets FDA guidelines for food and is not as vulnerable to temperature changes as unsealed water
- Tip:? Purchase water this year and use it for drinking next year.? This allows for rotation on an annual basis and keeps the water fresh. Yes water can go bad!
Water for sanitation use:
- Store extra containers of water to be used for flushing toilets, cleaning, and bathing.
- Purchase water purification tablets (Halazone) to be used if you still have running water but are told to boil water before using it.? This allows you to fill the bathtub and other containers without purchasing expensive drinking water.
- Tip:? Keep plastic containers (milk jugs and other containers) and fill them with water when a storm threatens.? You can put these items in the freezer to keep food cold longer in the event that the electricity goes out.
Non-perishable Food:?
- Maintain at least 3-7 days of food for each member of the family.
- Small, preferably single serving cans (should not require cooking or refrigeration). Dried fruit, peanut butter and jelly, coffee, tea, soft drinks and pet foods.
- Ready-to-eat canned meats, fruits and vegetables.
- Canned juices, milk, soup (if powdered, store extra water).
- Staples ? sugar, salt, pepper in water proof containers.
- High energy foods like crackers, granola bars, trail mix.
- Raw vegetables that do not need refrigeration. ? Fresh bread.
- Comfort/stress foods ? cookies, hard candy, sweetened cereals, lollipops, instant coffee, tea bags.
- Sterno for cooking.
- Vitamins
- Food for infants
- Paper cups, plates, and plastic utensils
- Non-electric can opener
- Aluminum foil
- Plastic storage containers
- Lots of ice (you can freeze your water supply)
- Pedialyte (to restore hydration if needed)
- Tip:? Purchase only items that you like to eat and would eat even without a storm.? Rotate these items by using them Dec-May each year and purchasing new items Jan-May.? This allows you to reduce the cost of buying items for a hurricane kit at one time and keeps the items fresh.? Yes even canned goods have a shelf life!

AAA Mich.: Gas prices rise 3 cents from last week
DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) ? AAA Michigan says gasoline prices have risen 3 cents during the past week to a statewide average of about $3.93 per gallon ahead of the Labor Day holiday.
The auto club said Monday the average is about 14 cents per gallon more than last year at this time.
Of the Michigan cities it surveys, AAA Michigan says the cheapest price for self-serve unleaded fuel is in the Flint area, where it's about $3.90 a gallon. The highest average is in the Ann Arbor area at about $3.96.
The increase comes as AAA Michigan estimates 1.2 million state residents have Labor Day travel plans, up about 1 percent from last year. Most are expected to travel by motor vehicle.
Dearborn-based AAA Michigan surveys 2,800 Michigan gas stations daily.

NEW YORK -- The man who shot and killed a former co-worker before being killed by police near the Empire State Building was being booted out of his apartment, a law enforcement official says.
Jeffrey Johnson, 58, an out-of-work accessories designer, killed Steve Ercolino, with whom he had been feuding, on Friday in midtown Manhattan. Nine bystanders were wounded as the result of police gunfire, three hit by bullets and six injured by ricocheted fragments.
A law enforcement official told NBC New York on Sunday that Johnson was subletting the Upper East Side apartment where he lived. The owner wanted to do renovations and asked Johnson to move out.?? It was recently reported that Vancity Investment Management is divesting its shares in beleaguered Canadian oil company, Enbridge.
Enbridge has made the news repeatedly over the last few years because of leaks in its pipelines. Not unrelatedly, the company has faced opposition from native and environmental groups with regard to its planned pipeline across northern Alberta and British Columbia. The combination of errors in its past and risks in its future is apparently just too much for Vancity, and perhaps for other socially- and environmentally-conscious investors.
This new announcement is, on the surface at least, a good example of the connection between ethics and business. It is often pointed out that, in order to stay in business, a company needs to maintain its ?social license to operate.? But more specifically it needs to retain the goodwill of key stakeholders, and investors are very high on that list.
But of course, investors can turn on a company for all kinds of reasons; the perception that the company isn?t doing well socially or environmentally (or more generally, ethically) is just one. Companies can take a hit to their shares for any number of reasons. Even if we limit ourselves to broadly ?social? reasons, there are good and bad reasons, reasons about which there is broad social consensus (e.g., child labour) and ones that are socially divisive (e.g., contributions to pro-choice or anti-abortion groups). And so on.
This points to an interesting question about the obligation that managers and boards have to manage risk. It is increasingly clear that the obligation to manage risk includes not just financial risk, but just about any risk to which the company might be subject. That includes environmental risks and reputational risks. Understandably, the two are intertwined. According to the story cited above, one ?ethical investment? company (Northwest & Ethical Investments LP) has expressed concern about Enbridge not (just?) because of the risks its pipeline poses, but because of the risk posed by opposition.
Should Enbridge (and its shareholders) be concerned about the Vancity divestment? That?s unclear. The divestment itself doesn?t sound catastrophic, but things could change if other investors follow suit. How likely that might be is also unclear. The interesting question is which kind of worry is more likely contagious: worries over environmental risks (and financial risks that go with those) or worries over risks of opposition.
In the end, it may not matter much. As I?ve argued before, oil companies need to do a better job of managing environmental risks. If they can succeed at that, they may well see the risks of social opposition melt away at the same time.
