Genetic Risks for Asthma May Persist Into Adulthood - Health News ...

June 28, 2013

FRIDAY, June 28 (HealthDay News) ? People with more genetic risks for asthma are not only more likely to develop the disease in childhood, but also more likely to continue to have asthma into adulthood, according to a new study.

Previous studies have linked several genes to increased asthma risk, so the researchers wanted to investigate the cumulative effect of those genes.

For the study, they analyzed data from 880 people in New Zealand who have been followed since they were born in 1972 or 1973. Those with more genetic risks for asthma developed asthma earlier in life than those with fewer genetic risks. Among study participants who developed asthma in childhood, asthma that persisted into adulthood was more likely in those with more genetic risks.

These patients also had more allergic reactions associated with severe and persistent asthma and developed lung function problems. Their quality of life also suffered because they missed work and school more often and were admitted to hospital more often due to asthma.

The study appears June 28 in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine.

?We?ve been able to look at how newly discovered genetic risks relate to the life course of asthma at an unprecedented level of resolution,? Daniel Belsky, a postdoctoral fellow at the Duke Institute for Genome Sciences and Policy and the Center for the Study of Aging and Human Development, said in a university news release.

However, much more research is needed before it may be possible to use genetic risk scores for asthma in patients, he noted.

?It will be important to explore how these genetic risks play out in environments that differ in terms of air pollution or other important, modifiable factors,? Belsky said.

He added that the study could lead to a better understanding of the biology of asthma and help efforts to develop new ways to prevent and treat asthma, which affects 26 million people in the United States.

Obama: I don't need 'photo op' with Mandela

President Obama is heading to South Africa from Senegal as part of his African tour, where Nelson Mandela's daughter says he might visit Mandela if doctors approve. NBC's Keir Simmons reports.

By Stacey Klein and Ian Johnston, NBC News

Barack Obama said Friday that he did not need a ?photo op? with Nelson Mandela, saying the ?last thing? he wanted to do was be intrusive at a time when the anti-apartheid icon?s family are concerned about his health.

However, the president did not rule out a meeting with Mandela, whose ex-wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela said Friday had made a ?great improvement? compared to a few days ago.

On Tuesday, Mandela's daughter Zindzi said that her father ?opened his eyes and gave me a smile? when she told him Obama was coming.

Speaking about her ex-husband Nelson Mandela, Winnie Mandela says, 'From what he was a few days ago, there is great improvement' in the former South African president's condition.

Speaking on Air Force One as he flew to South Africa from Senegal, Obama said that ?we?ll see what the situation is when we land.?

?I don't need photo op," he said. "The last thing I want to do is be intrusive at a time when the family is concerned? with Mandela?s condition.

He said the main message he wanted to deliver was ?profound gratitude? for Mandela?s leadership and to say that ?the thoughts and prayers of the American people are with him, his family and his country.?

This message could be delivered to his family and not directly to Mandela, the president said.

On Thursday, Obama said he had already had the "privilege of meeting Madiba [Mandela's clan name] and speaking to him."

"And he's a personal hero, but I don't think I'm unique in that regard," Obama added. "If and when he passes from this place, one thing I think we'll all know is that his legacy is one that will linger on throughout the ages."

Madikizela-Mandela, speaking outside Mandela's former home in the Johannesburg township of Soweto, said her ex-husband seemed to be getting better.

?I?m not a doctor but I can say that from what he was a few days ago there is great improvement," she said.

When asked by NBC News Special Correspondent Charlayne Hunter-Gault?whether the family would welcome a visit by Obama, Zindzi Mandela said Thursday she wasn't aware of any formal request. However, she added that decision would be left with doctors treating the Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

Ahead of his arrival in Johannesburg on Friday, an anti-Obama protest was held not far from the hospital where Mandela is being treated with one demonstrator claiming the U.S. president had been a ?disappointment.?

Siphiwe Sibeko / Reuters

Protesters protest the visit of President Barack Obama in Pretoria Friday. One said he viewed Obama as a "disappointment" and thought Nelson Mandela would too.

Reuters reported that nearly 1,000 trade unionists, Muslim activists, South African Communist Party members and others marched to the U.S. Embassy where they burned a U.S. flag, calling Obama's foreign policy ?arrogant and oppressive.?

"We had expectations of America's first black president. Knowing Africa's history, we expected more,? Khomotso Makola, a 19-year-old law student, told Reuters. He said Obama was a ?disappointment, I think Mandela too would be disappointed and feel let down.?

South African critics of Obama have focused in particular on his support for U.S. drone strikes overseas, which they say have killed hundreds of innocent civilians, and his failure to deliver on a pledge to close the U.S. military detention center at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba housing terrorism suspects.

However, Nigerian painter Sanusi Olatunji, 31, had brought portraits of both Mandela and Obama to add to a growing number of flowers, tribute notes and gifts outside the hospital.

?These are the two great men of my lifetime,? he told Reuters. ?To me, Mandela is a prophet who brought peace and opportunity. He made it possible for a black man like me to live in a country that was only for whites.?

In the latest statement on Mandela?s condition, South African President Jacob Zuma said the 94-year-old was ?much better? on Thursday than he had been the previous night. "The medical team continues to do a sterling job," he added.

A statement issued by Zuma?s office said he and Obama would hold ?crucial bilateral talks that will take forward relations between the two countries? on Saturday.

?South Africa values its warm and mutually beneficial relationship with the United States immensely. This is a significant visit which will take political, economic and people to people relations between the two countries to a higher level, while also enhancing cooperation between U.S. and the African continent at large,? it said.

The statement noted Obama?s visit was being made as South Africa prepares to celebrate ?20 years of freedom? ? 1994 saw the first elections in the country in which all its citizens were eligible to vote. Mandela voted for the first time in his life in that year and was elected the country?s first black president, serving until 1999.

?South Africa greatly appreciates the solidarity provided by the Anti-Apartheid Movement in the United States during the struggle for liberation,? the statement said.

Quantum-Tunneling Electrons Could Make Semiconductors Obsolete

No, you pretty much made that up. Or you're defining "major advancement" such that it cannot be a major advancement unless it's contradictory to current wisdom.

Regardless, the summary is clearly wrong, because there has been no breakthrough that lets information travel faster than light. If there were, we probably wouldn't be talking about transistors, we'd be talking about that breakthrough.

And the scientific wisdom is almost always right -- that's why it's so impressive when it's wrong. You absolutely should treat any claim of FTL with the same extreme skepticism as hollow Earthism. Especially since it is relatively easy to show (eg. to those with approx. an undergraduate education in a related field, or a precocious high-schooler) that FTL implies the possibility of backward time travel, barring a few really, really conceptually unlikely and unsatisfying scenarios.

In my experience, this notion of "major scientific* advances are always people who don't accept conventional wisdom" only ever seems to come up in discussions about the speed of light, in discussions about global warming, and in discussions about Young Earth Creationism. I might be forgetting a couple. But I think the unifying feature is that people really, really *want* the truth to be different from what all the evidence points to, because that would be so awesome. Well, the awesomeness is debatable in terms of YEC, but it would be really cool if global climate change were something that'll sort itself out without us, or if the speed of light turned out to be just a trivial matter and all the stupid scientists were just dribbling their lips with their fingers instead of pressing harder on the gas pedal. It's just not what anything points to and we should demand extraordinary evidence of claims to the contrary just like we would demand extraordinary evidence of a machine that resurrects people hundreds of years dead with their memories intact. Okay, maybe that latter claim is even more unlikely to be true -- but then again the extraordinary evidence should be a bit easier to produce if it is true, so I think that balances.

*For political advances people say this all the time. It's often how they defend people like Stallman for being an asshole, or Gates or Jobs or Torvalds etc..

Documents show IRS also screened liberal groups

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Internal Revenue Service's screening of groups seeking tax-exempt status was broader and lasted longer than has been previously disclosed, the new head of the agency acknowledged Monday. Terms including "Israel," ''Progressive" and "Occupy" were used by agency workers to help pick groups for closer examination, according to an internal IRS document obtained by The Associated Press.

The IRS has been under fire since last month after admitting it targeted tea party and other conservative groups that wanted the tax-exempt designation for tough examinations. While investigators have said that agency screening for those groups had stopped in May 2012, Monday's revelations made it clear that screening for other kinds of organizations continued until earlier this month, when the agency's new chief, Danny Werfel, says he discovered it and ordered it halted.

The IRS document said an investigation into why specific terms were included was still underway. It blamed the continued use of inappropriate criteria by screeners on "a lapse in judgment" by the agency's former top officials. The document did not name the officials, but many top leaders have been replaced.

Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee released 15 lists of terms that the IRS agency used and has provided to congressional investigators. Some of the lists, which evolved over time, used the terms "Progressive" and "Tea Party" and others including "Medical Marijuana," ''Occupied Territory Advocacy," ''Healthcare legislation," ''Newspaper Entities" and "Paying National Debt."

The lists were dated between August 2010 and April 2013 ? the month before the IRS targeting of conservative groups was revealed. They ranged from 11 pages to 17 pages but were heavily blacked out to protect sensitive taxpayer information.

Neither the IRS document obtained by the AP or the 15 IRS lists of terms addressed how many progressive groups received close scrutiny or how the agency treated their requests. Dozens of conservative groups saw their applications experience lengthy delays, and they received unusually intrusive questions about their donors and other details that agency officials have conceded were inappropriate.

In a conference call with reporters, Werfel said that after becoming acting IRS chief last month, he discovered varied and improper terms on the lists and said screeners were still using them.

He did not specify what terms were on the lists, but said he suspended the use of all such lists immediately. Lists from April 2013 that were released included the terms "Paying National Debt" and "Green Energy Organizations."

"There was a wide-ranging set of categories and cases that spanned a broad spectrum" on the lists, Werfel said. He added that his aides found those lists contained "inappropriate criteria that was in use."

Werfel ordered a halt in the use of spreadsheets listing the terms ? called BOLO lists for "be on the lookout for? on June 12 and formalized their suspension with a June 20 written order, according to the IRS document the AP obtained. Investigators have previously said that the lists evolved over time as screeners found new names and phrases to help them identify groups to examine.

Democrats on the House Ways and Means Committee released one of the lists, dated November 2010, that the IRS has provided to congressional investigators. That 16-page document, with many parts blacked out, shows that the terms "Progressive" and "Tea Party" were both on that list, as well as "Medical Marijuana," ''occupied territory advocacy" and "Healthcare legislation."

Rep. Sander Levin of Michigan, top Democrat on the Ways and Means panel, said he was writing a letter to J. Russell George, the Treasury Department inspector general whose audit in May detailed IRS targeting of conservatives, asking why his report did not mention other groups that were targeted.

"The audit served as the basis and impetus for a wide range of congressional investigations and this new information shows that the foundation of those investigations is flawed in a fundamental way," Levin said.

Republicans said there was a distinction. A statement by the GOP staff of House Ways and Means said, "It is one thing to flag a group, it is quite another to repeatedly target and abuse conservative groups."

George's report criticized the IRS for using "inappropriate criteria" to identify tea party and other conservative groups. It did not mention more liberal organizations, but in response to questions from lawmakers at congressional hearings, George said he had recently found other lists that raised concerns about other "political factors" he did not specify.

On Monday, Karen Kraushaar, a spokeswoman for the inspector general, said their May audit focused on terms the IRS used to pick cases to be studied for political campaign activity, which might disqualify a group from tax-exempt status.

She said the inspector general has since found other "criteria" the agency used to list potential cases, and "we are reviewing whether these criteria led to expanded scrutiny for other reasons and why these criteria were implemented."

Democratic staff on Ways and Means said in a press release that they had verified that of the 298 groups seeking tax-exempt status that George's audit had examined, some were liberal organizations ? something George's report did not mention.

Many organizations seeking tax-exempt designation were applying for so-called 501(c)(4) status, named for its section of the federal revenue code. IRS regulations allow that status for groups mostly involved in "social welfare" and that don't engage in election campaigns for or against candidates as their "primary" activity, and it is up to the IRS to judge whether applicants meet those vaguely defined requirements.

Werfel's remarks came as he released an 83-page examination he has conducted of his embattled agency. The conclusions, which Werfel cautioned are preliminary, have so far found there was "insufficient action" by IRS managers to prevent and disclose the problem involving the screening of certain groups, but no specific clues of misconduct.

"We have not found evidence of intentional wrongdoing by anyone in the IRS or involvement in these matters by anyone outside the IRS," he told reporters.

The report found no indication so far of improper screening beyond the IRS offices, mostly in Cincinnati, that examine groups seeking tax-exempt status.

Werfel's report describes several new procedures the agency is installing to prevent unfair treatment of taxpayers in the future. They include a fast-track process for groups seeking tax-exempt status that have yet to get a response from the IRS within 120 days of applying. He is also creating an Accountability Review Board, which within 60 days is supposed to recommend any additional personnel moves "to hold accountable those responsible" for the targeting of conservative groups, Werfel's report said.

The top five people in the agency responsible for the tax-exempt status of organizations have already been removed, including the former acting commissioner, Steven Miller, whom President Barack Obama replaced with Werfel.

"The IRS is committed to correcting its mistakes, holding individuals accountable as appropriate" and establishing new controls to reduce potential future problems, Werfel told reporters.

IRS screening of conservative groups had sparked investigations by three congressional committees, the Justice Department and a Treasury Department inspector general.

Werfel's comments and report drew negative reviews from one of the IRS's chief critics in Congress, Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

Issa said the review "fails to meaningfully answer the largest outstanding questions about inappropriate inquiries and indefensible delays. As investigations by Congress and the Justice Department are still ongoing, Mr. Werfel's assertion that he has found no evidence that anyone at IRS intentionally did anything wrong can only be called premature."

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp, R-Mich., whose panel is also investigating the agency, said the IRS "still needs to provide clear answers to the most significant questions ? who started this practice, why was it allowed to continue for so long, and how widespread was it? This culture of political discrimination and intimidation goes far beyond basic management failure and personnel changes alone won't fix a broken IRS."

Werfel had promised to produce a report within a month of taking over the agency.

Werfel said he briefed Obama and Treasury Secretary Jacob J. Lew on the report earlier Monday.

Werfel, initially named the IRS's acting commissioner, is now the agency's deputy principal commissioner because federal law limits the time an agency can be led by an acting official.

May Home Sales: Homewood Sales on the Rise - Real Estate ...

Year-over-year, Homewood saw a boost in the number of homes sold during the month of May. Median home prices decreased, however, according to the Mainstreet Organization of Realtors.

The 33 single, detached homes sold in Homewood during May 2013 represented a 200-percent increase?over May 2012, when 11 homes were sold, according to the Mainstreet Organization of Realtors (MORe).

There were?19 homes sold in?Homewood?during April.

Homewood median home prices, however, dropped a bit from May 2012, from $131,000 to $130,000.

Sales of single-family, detached homes in suburban Chicago increased 29.1 percent in May 2013 compared with the same period a year ago, MORe reported. Sales in the 200 communities MORe gathers information on in DuPage, Lake and suburban Cook counties?experienced notable sales gains last month.

Sales momentum is expected to continue in those communities, as the number of detached homes under contract in May grew by 45 percent in those same communities, according to MORe.

Competition in the housing market is going to continue as the market works through a backlog of distressed properties, said Tonya Corder, president of MORe and managing broker of Keller Williams Preferred Realty in Orland Park.

?Buyers need to come in aggressively with their first price, especially on moderately priced homes in good condition,? Corder said ?We are seeing multiple offers and people writing contracts on properties the day they come onto the market. ... There is a buzz going on in real estate right now. People want to take advantage of this market.?

Factbox: Power projects in the Philippines

MANILA (Reuters) - Some of the Philippines' biggest conglomerates have unveiled plans to push into power generation over the next five years, with investments seen reaching $9 billion.

Concerns are growing that some of these projects will face delays, hampering the country's ability to drive steady long-term growth after expanding its economy at an annual rate of 7.8 percent in the first quarter, the fastest in Asia.

Following is a list of companies planning to invest in power:

ABOITIZ POWER CORP

Aboitiz Power, which has a portfolio of power plants with a total capacity of 2,400 megawatts, plans to invest $3 billion to build new plants and increase the capacity of existing facilities.

Aboitiz Power, a unit of conglomerate Aboitiz Equity Ventures Inc aims to increase its total generation capacity by 50 percent to 3,500 MW by 2018, making it the country's biggest power producer.

Projects include a 300 MW coal-fired power plant in central Cebu province, which is still on the drawing board, the 400 MW expansion of its Pagbilao coal-fired power plant in Luzon, and a 600 MW coal-fired power plant in partnership with Manila Electric Co also in Luzon.

AYALA CORP

Ayala Corp's unlisted unit, AC Energy Holdings Inc, is looking to build a portfolio of $2.5 billion worth of power facilities generating as much as 1,000 MW over the next five years.

Ayala recently entered into an agreement to acquire a 20 percent stake in GN Power Mariveles Coal Plant Co, a 600 MW coal-fired facility that started operation in May.

It has a 50 percent interest in South Luzon Thermal Energy Corp which is constructing a 270 MW coal plant in Batangas province in partnership with Trans Asia Oil and Development Corp.

SAN MIGUEL CORP

San Miguel's unlisted unit, SMC Global Power, plans to invest $1.5 billion in two power projects, one in Luzon and another in Mindanao, with a total capacity of 900 MW.

San Miguel, the Philippines' most diversified conglomerate, aims to raise $150 million to as much as $700 million via an initial public offering of SMC Global this year to fund projects that it hopes to complete by 2015.

SMC Global, currently the country's largest power producer, operates the Sual coal, Ilijan natural gas and San Roque hydro power plants providing 2,545 MW to the Luzon grid.

MANILA ELECTRIC CO

Meralco, the Philippines' largest power utility supplying power to Manila and several provinces in Luzon, has teamed up with Aboitiz Power and Taiwan Cogeneration Corp to build a 600 MW coal-fired power plant in Subic Freeport Economic Zone in the northwestern Zambales province.

The Subic project requires total investment of $1.2 billion. The project has been delayed by public resistance to coal due to environmental concerns and some regulatory issues, and the company has pushed back its start date to 2017.

GT CAPITAL HOLDINGS INC

Global Business Power Corp, a unit of conglomerate GT Capital and the main electricity provider in the Visayas, plans to build a 30-billion-peso ($730 million) coal-fired plant that will produce 300 MW for the Mindanao grid in partnership with Meralco.

Global Business also expects to spend at least $480 million to increase the capacity of its power facilities in the central Philippines.

It plans to expand into Luzon, where it sees the power supply at a critical level by 2018.

ALSONS CONSOLIDATED RESOURCES INC

Alsons believes its power unit is on track to produce an additional 282 MW by 2016 to meet power-starved Mindanao's growing demand for electricity.

The company's current capacity is at 181 MW, from its three operating power facilities on the island.

By 2016, Alsons expects total capacity of 463 MW, more than a quarter of the Department of Energy's projected Mindanao peak power demand of 1,829 MW.

Key differences in the 2014 defense policy bills

WASHINGTON (AP) ? There are key differences in the sweeping defense policy bills moving through the Republican-led House and the Democratic-run Senate. Here's a look at disparities between legislation approved Friday by the House and a bill passed Thursday by the Senate Armed Services Committee. Once the full Senate approves the committee's bill, a panel made up of members from both chambers will meet to resolve differences.

___

GUANTANAMO BAY

The House bill rejects President Barack Obama's latest plea to shutter the military-run prison in Cuba, and IT bars the administration from transferring its terror suspects to the United States or TO a foreign country such as Yemen. The Senate bill provides the Defense Department with additional flexibility to transfer detainees to the U.S. and other countries, with the objective of closing the detention facility.

___

MISSILE DEFENSE

The House bill provides $140 million as a down payment for a new missile defense site on the East Coast to expand the country's defenses from a potential ballistic missile attack by Iran. The Senate bill does not require an East Coast site, opting instead to require the Pentagon to deploy additional radars to improve the capabilities of existing missile defense sites on the West Coast.

___

SEXUAL ASSAULT

The House bill requires a mandatory minimum sentence of two years in prison for a member of the armed services convicted of rape or sexual assault in a military court. The Senate bill includes a provision requiring automatic review by an individual higher in the chain of command should a commander decide not to prosecute a sexual assault allegation.

But there also is plenty of common ground in other areas, as many lawmakers believe aggressive legislative action is needed to halt the epidemic of sexual assaults in the military. Both bills would strip military commanders of the power to overturn convictions in rape and sexual assault cases and require that anyone found guilty of a sex-related crime receive a punishment that includes, at a minimum, a dismissal from military service or a dishonorable discharge.

___

AFGHANISTAN

The House bill adds $5 billion to the administration's budget request of roughly $80 billion for Afghanistan war costs to offset the negative impact of the automatic spending cuts on military readiness. The Senate bill approved the Obama administration's request for war costs and added $1.8 billion to cover readiness shortfalls. The House bill also would block the U.S. from spending $2.6 billion to train and equip Afghan security forces until the Defense and State departments have certified to Congress that the two countries have signed an agreement governing the presence of U.S. forces there after the current combat mission ends in 2014. The Senate committee bill has no such prohibition.

___

HIGHER PAY

The House bill provides U.S. troops with a 1.8 percent annual pay raise. The Senate bill authorizes a 1 percent increase in pay for the troops, which is the amount the Defense Department requested.

Yesterday, at the exterior of a grocery store, I got a little cut on my right hand by slightly hitting a shelving unit. This was metal shelving unit, with a lot of rust. So basically, I cut myself with rusty metal. I got to drug store to buy some cotton and hydrogen peroxyde, so I desinfected the cut after a few minutes.
So now I'm worried about tetanus, pale, I did get a shot one year ago, but no protection is perfect and I'm still worried. What should I do? Should I go to the clinic? And could they do something?
