The articles are just a tool--you're using your free reprint articles to get a higher ranking for your website. The articles themselves will not necessarily get or maintain a high ranking. If they do it's wonderful, but really it's icing on the cake and shouldn't contribute to your measurement of your success.

By the way, in case you're wondering why your articles start out strong in Google (and the other search engines) and then lose traction over time, it's because of the freshness of the content.

This is why a newly released article may appear high in the rankings, at least to start with. Google wants to provide its users with the latest information, and once the article is no longer considered "fresh", then content that's been around a while and that's based on those same keyword phrases can start to outrank it.

Incidentally, this works in your favor, because it shows that it's not always new content that gets the high ranking. There are all sorts of indicators that Google evaluates when deciding which sites to rank and in what order, and the authority or usefulness of a site is a main consideration.

The older a web page is, the more time it has had to build authority and power. You very well may see your articles that have fallen down the rankings start to climb back up after a while, if the article has proven to be consistently useful to the readers.

Now, back to the original question--if the ranking of your article is not the definitive thing to look for, what is?

Here are two stats that are great for indicating how you're doing in your article marketing campaign:

1 - Monitor the search engine ranking for your website for the keywords associated with your site.

That may sound technical, but really it's pretty simple. Every web page is about a topic. Some are more focused than others, but hopefully if you have a website that you're trying to market, you have a definite topic that your website is about.

Now, step into your potential readers' shoes:

When they go to Google, what are they typing into the search box when they're looking for information on your topic?

Once you've done that, then you would go to Google and type each keyword phrase into the search box, and see where your website is listed in the rankings. This is the ultimate gauge of success--your goal is for your website to be on page one of the results for your keyword terms, ideally appearing in the #1 position.

2 - Track your website traffic.

A related stat to the search engine ranking is your own website traffic. The reason why these two stats are related is that the higher your site appears in Google's rankings, the more traffic will be coming to your website.

Remember, all of this takes time, and this stats tracking you're doing is done just one time a month.

If you're just starting to market your website, it can take a few months of consistent article submissions before you start to see any positive change in the search engines--that's normal. But you'll eventually see your site starting to climb up the rankings, sometimes making big jumps and other times either holding its position or making smaller jumps.

You'll see how amazing it is that with article marketing you can actually influence Google's rankings for your website, and that's what will lead to the most dramatic results.

Saturday night's launch from the Poker Flats Research Range in Fairbanks, Alaska, was part of a NASA-funded mission called the Magnetosphere-Ionosphere Coupling in the Alfven Resonator, or MICA for short. The project involves researchers from the University of New Hampshire, Cornell, Dartmouth, the Southwest Research Institute, the University of Oslo and?the University of Alaska at Fairbanks.

A two-stage, 40-foot-tall Terrier-Black Brant rocket was sent arcing through the aurora to a height of 186 miles, sending down a real-time data stream as it flew. The payload was recovered 200 miles downrange,?UNH said in a?news release.

MICA's aim is to?measure?electric and magnetic?fields and sample the charged particles in Earth's upper atmosphere while they're under the influence of a form of electromagnetic energy known as Alfven waves. That's the theory, and it appears to?be valid, but there's never been any really good measurement of the process in action. That's what MICA is all about," Lessard said.

Japan firms talk on system chip tie in reform drive: sources (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Renesas Electronics and two other big Japanese chip makers are in talks to combine their struggling system chip operations in a government-backed deal, sources said, as pressure mounts for drastic reforms to confront stiff global competition.

Fujitsu Ltd, Panasonic Corp and Japan's government-backed Innovation Network Corp, an investment fund, would also be part of the deal, which could outsource production to privately held chip maker GlobalFoundries, sources familiar with the matter said.

Japan's once high-flying chip sector has been forced into a series of mergers and restructuring drives over the past decade to keep up with aggressive competitors in the United States, South Korea and Taiwan, led by Intel Corp and Samsung Electronics.

Under the latest plan, the new company will develop system chips, which serve as the brains of electronic gadgets and automobiles, but outsource production.

The move would revamp a money-losing division for Renesas, a market leader in system chips by sales ahead of Intel and Broadcom Corp, and allow Panasonic and Fujitsu to focus on more profitable businesses.

"This is just one of many options under consideration," one of the sources said, adding that other areas of the chip sector were also under discussion and there could be further twists and turns as talks proceed.

As part of the deal, the sources said California-based GlobalFoundries could also buy cash-strapped Elpida Memory's chip production plant in Hiroshima, while the Nikkei business daily said Elpida, which has been battered by a strong yen and tumbling memory chip prices, would move its DRAM chip production to Taiwan.

The news sparked a surge in chipmaker shares, with Renesas jumping as much as 14 percent to a three-month high of 576 yen and Elpida climbing to an intraday high of 374 yen, up nearly 10 percent. Fujitsu rose 5 percent to 399 yen.

"The first observation is that it looks good for every company -- Elpida, Fujitsu, Panasonic and Renesas," said Yasuo Sakuma, portfolio manager at Bayview Asset Management.

But he remained skeptical.

"It's like the bad parts of a banana, apple and orange getting put together in a mixer to make juice. If you drink that it may taste good the first time. But the juice will go bad in a couple of days."

BAD JUICE?

Renesas, Fujitsu and Panasonic said separately that no decisions had been taken regarding their chip businesses, while Elpida said the report on the sale of the Hiroshima plant was incorrect, but gave no details.

The Nikkei said the three companies were expected to hammer out a basic agreement by the end of March and would aim to set up a new company by the end of this year. But one of the sources suggested the time frame was too ambitious, especially given that various options were under review.

Haruo Sato, senior analyst at Tokai-Tokyo Securities, saw potential snags to an agreement.

"The top management of the three companies would have to reach agreements on tough issues such as allocation of resources, including job cuts. I think it will be extremely hard for them to reach a compromise," he said.

The Japanese government is wary of allowing technology know-how to disappear overseas and used its Innovation Network fund in a similar move last year, announcing plans to merge the small to medium sized liquid crystal display (LCD) panel operations of three firms into a new company.

Japanese chipmakers have been hit hard over the past year by a sluggish economy and a strong yen, with many falling into the red on an operating basis.

Renesas, itself the product of successive mergers of the chip divisions of Hitachi, Mitsubishi Electric and NEC Corp, reported an operating loss of 33.2 billion yen ($430 million) for the nine months to December 31.

Elpida, set up to take over the struggling DRAM operations of several Japanese chipmakers a decade ago and now scrambling to meet debt repayment deadlines in late March and early April, last week posted a wider-than-expected 43.8 billion yen operating loss for the October-December quarter.

Speculation has swirled that Elpida was seeking a rescue deal with U.S. DRAM maker Micron Technology and its Taiwanese technology partner, Nanya Technology, although Elpida President Yukio Sakamoto has played down the need for an immediate equity tie-up.

Japanese chip industry leader Toshiba which has largely remained above the merger fray in recent years, cut its full-year operating profit forecast by one-third to 200 billion yen after posting a 72 percent drop in third-quarter profit.

Each grey-and-yellow plastic canister contains 100 milligrams of caffeine powder, about the amount in a large cup of coffee, plus B vitamins.

But Democratic U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer of New York wants the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to review AeroShot, saying he fears it will be used as a club drug so that young people can drink until they drop. Schumer?s national press secretary did not immediately respond to calls for comment.

FDA spokeswoman Siobhan DeLancey declined to comment, saying the agency will respond directly to Schumer on the matter.

Edwards said Schumer?s comments are understandable in the context of developments over the last few years, when students looking for a quick and cheap buzz began consuming caffeine-packed alcoholic drinks they dubbed ?blackout in a can? because of their potency. But he said AeroShot is not targeting anyone under 18 and it safely delivers caffeine into the mouth, just like coffee.

?Even with coffee ? if you look at the reaction in Europe to coffee when it first appeared ? there was quite a bit of hysteria,? he said. ?So anything new, there?s always some knee-jerk reaction that makes us believe ?Well, maybe it?s not safe.??

Once a user shoots a puff of calorie-free AeroShot into his or her mouth, the lemon-lime powder begins dissolving almost instantly. Each single-use container has up to six puffs.

Lack of human cadavers? Turn to papier-m?ch? medicine

She stares blankly across the room. Her Roman nose and clown-like mouth look freakish amidst the rivers of blue veins that run along her face.

The face I'm peering at belongs to a 150-year-old life-sized anatomical model, created entirely from papier-m?ch?. She?s currently housed in the Melbourne Museum in Victoria, Australia.

Her muscle threads, tiny capillaries and wiry bronchioles were meticulously forged by French physician and anatomist Louis Thomas Jer?me Auzoux in the 1840s.

As a medical student in the early 19th century, Auzoux was frustrated by the poor dissection models that were available. Wax figures quickly deteriorated and human cadavers were hard to come by. So he began experimenting with paper and glue.

By 1822, the same year he finished his medical degree, Auzoux had completed his first anatomical figure, which was regarded a triumphant success by the Paris Academy of Medicine. Five years later, he opened a factory to manufacture the models.

In 2000, R?gis Olry at the University of Qu?bec in Trois-Rivi?res, Canada, described Auzoux?s technique in detail. ?The anatomical specimens had to be in cardboard, casted in lead matrix under a wood coating,? he wrote.

Auzoux wrapped linen around wire to form the network of fine veins, and used hemp to shape larger blood vessels. A thin layer of plaster coats the papier-m?ch?, which was painted with egg tempera - a mixture of coloured pigment and egg yolk - to make the model shine.

According to?Nurin Veis, curator of human biology and medicine at Melbourne Museum, there are only a few hundred of Auzoux?s creations in the world - female models being particularly scarce. This is possibly because sculpting unclad ladies was taboo at the time, she says.

?There has always been a little more modesty about displaying a completely unclothed female form compared to a male,? says Veis. ?It?s also possible that physicians were not as interested in learning about the female form compared to a male.?

There is some debate about whether the sculpture is based on a real person, and Veis remains sceptical. ?Her proportions are bizarre,? she says. She has a pin-shaped head, broad shoulders and a barrelled chest, with breasts poking up like hedgehog snouts.

Still, this figure would have been accurate enough to serve its educational purpose. Other features such as arteries and organs are ?roughly where you would find them,? says Veis. ?This would be a good starting point for people that had never looked inside a human body.?

While museum visitors are unable to handle the sculpture from outside her glass coffin, the model can be opened at the chest to expose a liver, intestines, lungs and reproductive organs.

I?m told, however, that our model is lacking a crucial organ, which appears to have gone missing at some point in the sculpture?s long history. ?Someone has captured her heart,? Veis quips.

The anatomical model is on long-term loan to Melbourne Museum from the University of Sydney?s Macleay Museum. It will be on display to visitors at Melbourne Museum between 10am and 5pm daily.
